Author biography

Joe Pemberton was born in Moss Side, Manchester in 1960. His parents emigrated from the West Indies to England in the late fifties, before moving to Ashton-under-Lyne in 1970. He has worked as an electrical engineer and a college lecturer. He is a graduate of the University of Manchester Creative Writing Course. He has had two novels published, Forever and Ever Amen and A Long Time Dead and has just completed a third novel entitled I Wander As I Wander and is seeking a publisher. He has written stage adaptations for both novels and has had Forever and Ever Amen workshopped at the Library Theatre, Manchester. He was also one of the judges for the 2004 Crocus Novel Competition. He has given many readings, e.g. Waterstones; several North-West libraries including Manchester Central library, Oldham, Powerhouse, Hulme, etc., as well as interviews on national and local radio. Joe Pemberton is based in Edinburgh. My latest novel. ‘I Wonder As I Wander.’ Meet 'George', as he is called by his supervisor Beryl. ‘George’ is a former electrical engineer and college lecturer turned market researcher with an unparalleled knowledge of pop trivia and a striking opinion on everything. As he goes from door to door interviewing people he meets Greater Manchester's full social spectrum in the city's council estates from racists to oversexed 14 year-olds. Add to this strange mix his mother's recent death and an identity crisis, 'George' is losing his bearings. Increasingly veering towards the bizarre, he commits an act of which no-one, even George, thought him capable. A "Forever And Ever Amen for grown-ups" novel about a black Northern’s wonderings as he wanders from street to street, Row to Range, and Court to Cul-de-sac plying his trade on Manchester's streets. I’ve compiled a list of music tracks directly or indirectly referred to within the novel. The list can be found in the 'Music from I Wonder As I Wander' section.
